Izvidnica

Izvidnica

Mihailo Lalić

The collection of short stories shows the horrors of war, moral dilemmas and psychological conditions of soldiers in Montenegro. Lalić masterfully portrays human suffering, resistance and struggle for survival in the whirlwind of war.

The collection of short stories "Izvidnica" (published in 1966) by one of the most prominent Montenegrin and Yugoslav writers of the 20th century, Mihailo Lalić, represents a strong literary testimony about the Second World War in the territory of Montenegro. Through a series of striking short prose works, Lalić delves deeply into the psychology of an individual in the extreme conditions of war, illegal work and constant danger. The action of the stories is set in harsh karst and mountain areas that are not only a geographical framework, but also an active participant in human dramas. The author avoids pathetic heroism and black-and-white portrayal of characters; instead, it focuses on the inner struggles, fears, doubts, loneliness and moral trials of the fighters and the people caught in the war. The characters in "Izvidnica" are often scouts in the figurative sense — those who first step into the unknown, whether on the battlefield or in the depths of their own consciousness. Lalić's style is characterized by extreme drama, richness of language imbued with local color and dense, atmospheric prose. "Izvidnica" confirms the author as a top master of the war and psychological story, which focuses on man and his struggle to preserve dignity.
