Republikanci

Republikanci

Marija Jurić Zagorka

The novel is set in a turbulent period of 18th-century Croatian history, when the nobility and the bourgeoisie fought for power and influence. The main theme of the novel is the conflict between the nobles and the republicans – people who stood for freedo

The plot follows the young noblewoman Dorothea, a brave and proud girl who falls in love with Martin, the leader of the republican movement. Although they belong to opposite social classes, their love defies social norms and political intrigue. Dorothea gradually becomes aware of the injustices that prevail among the nobility and begins to adhere to republican ideas.

On the other hand, Martin is a bold and charismatic leader who fights against the tyranny of the nobles and stands for equality among people. His struggle encounters numerous obstacles - betrayals, intrigues and dangers, but he remains steadfast in his mission.

Zagorka skilfully builds a plot full of intrigue, love vicissitudes and political conflicts, showing the complexity of social relations and the struggle between advanced ideas and conservative government. The characters are extremely dynamic and emotionally complex, and the plot is full of tense scenes and dramatic turns.

The novel Republikanci reflects Zagorka's passion for historical themes and justice, but also her ability to speak about social problems and the desire for freedom through a love story. Through Dorothea and Martin, Zagorka portrays fearlessness and the struggle for ideals, while at the same time depicting the historical context with authenticity and literary power.

Experts on Zagorka's work consider Republikanci to be one of the author's most successful novels.
