Kroz pustinju i prašumu

Kroz pustinju i prašumu

Henryk Sienkiewicz

An adventure story set in Africa at the end of the 19th century. It follows the fate of two young protagonists, 14-year-old Pole Stas Tarkowski and 8-year-old Englishwoman Nel Rawlison, who are kidnapped by Sudanese robbers in colonial Egypt.

Staś and Nel, children of engineers working on the construction of the Suez Canal, become victims of a kidnapping organized by Mahdi, the leader of the Sudanese uprising. The kidnappers lead them through the harsh deserts and jungles of East Africa, hoping to use them as hostages. But the brave and resourceful Staś takes responsibility for their salvation. With the help of their faithful African friends, Kali and Mea, and the elephant King and the dog Sabi, Staś and Nel go through a series of dangerous adventures, facing wild animals, storms, disease and hostile tribes.

The novel abounds in vivid descriptions of the African landscape, from desert dunes to dense rainforests, and depicts the conflict between colonial powers and indigenous cultures. Sienkiewicz highlights Staś's courage, ingenuity and loyalty, while little Nel shows surprising strength despite her fragility. The story emphasizes the themes of friendship, loyalty and the fight for freedom.

After numerous obstacles, Staś manages to free himself and Nel, and their courage and solidarity triumph. The novel ends with their return to safety, celebrating human endurance and moral strength.
