Pevač priča

The Storyteller (1960) is one of the most important and influential contemporary studies on oral literature. It is the result of years of research into the ways of creating and performing oral poetry in Montenegro, Sandžak, and a part of Bosnia and Herzeg

Lord also began publishing an exceptionally rich collection of poems and interviews with epic singers, which he and Milman Perry recorded in Yugoslavia. So far, a dozen volumes of the collection “Serbo-Croatian Heroic Songs” (Harvard University Press), edited by Lord and his student David Bynam, have been published.

In the first volume (“Theory”), Lord shows how oral poetry was created, which “is not only performed orally but also comes into being while being performed orally,” and in the second volume (“Examples”) he shows how this theory is applied using concrete examples.

The book was created using examples preserved in Perry’s collection. The collection has been used by many before, including many scholars in Bosnia and Herzegovina who have studied oral epics, and we would like to especially mention the works of Đenana Buturović and Munib Maglajlić. This book reminds us of the "great masters" of epic poetry, such as Avdo Međedović, who is "our contemporary Balkan Storyteller", but also of numerous others from the Yugoslav region.
