In her book Haider – The Light and Shadows of a Career, Christa Zöchling offers a journalistically precise and critical portrait of Jörg Haider, the most controversial Austrian politician of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Starting from his early rise in the Freedom Party (FPÖ), the author traces how his talent for rhetoric, media skills and constant provocations pushed the boundaries of acceptable discourse.
Zöchling reconstructs key episodes: interventions in party coups, the leadership of Carinthia, the scandals surrounding statements about “jobs under Hitler”, the split and the founding of the BZÖ, as well as the spiraling relationship with the tabloids.
