U svom uvodu američkom izdanju, Isherwood objašnjava: “Svi zavjerenici bilježe manji angažman u onome što Shelley naziva ‘velikim ratom između starih i mladih’. A kakav je to rat bio!” na mnogo načina ovaj je roman (poput klasičnih Berlinskih priča) djelo iz razdoblja koje izrasta iz određene povijesne situacije—sukoba između roditelja i djece sa svim njihovim strastvenim moralnim borbama. Isherwoodov živopisni prikaz starije generacije koja se pokušava održati dok se mlađa generacija pokušava osloboditi i dalje odjekuje i razoružava.
