Chagall Marc, französischer Maler und Grafiker weißrussischer Herkunft.

Studierte in St. Petersburg, Berlin und Paris, wo er seit 1910 lebt. Er entwickelt intensive malerische, grafische und szenografische Aktivitäten in Frankreich, Deutschland, Russland, Amerika; seit 1946 ist er wieder in Frankreich. Bildete einen unverwechselbaren künstlerischen Ausdruck in der Atmosphäre des Kubismus, Expressionismus, symbolischen Mystizismus und Surrealismus. Inspiriert von russischen Volkssagen und Folklore, permanent besessen von Erinnerungen an das provinzielle jüdische Umfeld aus seiner Kindheit in Witebsk und phantasmagorischen Erscheinungen, schuf er originelle Kunstwerke mit raffinierter Sensibilität und Fantasie, die durch eine Mischung aus grotesker und sensibler Poesie und u. a. faszinieren unverwechselbare Farbe. Radiofresken in der Pariser Oper und im Neubau der Metropolitan Opera in New York, Buntglasfenster in den Kathedralen von Metz, Reims, der Synagoge in Jerusalem und im UN-Palast in New York. Er arbeitete an der Szenografie für russische Ballette und Theaterstücke in europäischen und amerikanischen Theatern. Das Chagall-Museum wurde 1969 in Nizza eröffnet.
