Život i djelo - Chagall

Život i djelo - Chagall

Nathaniel Harris

Chagall Marc, French painter and graphic artist of Belarusian origin.

Studied in St. Petersburg, Berlin and Paris, where he has been living since 1910. He develops intensive painting, graphic and scenographic activities in France, Germany, Russia, America; since 1946 he has been in France again. Formed a distinctive artistic expression in the atmosphere of cubism, expressionism, symbolic mysticism and surrealism. Inspired by Russian folk legends and folklore, permanently obsessed with memories of the provincial Jewish environment from his childhood in Vitebsk and phantasmagorical apparitions, he created original works of art with refined sensibility and imagination, which fascinate with a mixture of grotesque and sensitive poetry and a distinctive color. Radio frescoes in the Paris Opera and the new building of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, stained glass windows in the cathedrals in Metz, Reims, the synagogue in Jerusalem and in the UN Palace in New York. He worked on scenography for Russian ballets and theater plays in European and American theaters. The Chagall Museum was opened in Nice in 1969.
