Večer u Bizantu

Irwin Shaw

An Evening in Byzantium (1973) by Irwin Shaw is a novel that follows Jesse Craig, a once-successful Hollywood producer in middle age, whose life is falling apart.

Set mainly at the Cannes Film Festival, the novel explores themes of aging, loss of relevance, morality and the search for meaning in a world obsessed with fame and money.

Craig, faced with financial problems and a failed marriage, comes to Cannes to sell his latest film project. In the luxurious but decadent environment of the festival, he meets old friends, ex-lovers and young ambitious people who remind him of his past and failed dreams. His relationship with the young journalist Anne, who interviews him, becomes a catalyst for introspection. Through conversations and memories, Craig examines his life decisions, from success in Hollywood to the compromises that cost him his integrity.

The plot is intertwined with the glamor of Cannes, but also its dark side - corruption, jealous rivalry and the superficiality of the film industry. Craig's struggle to stay true to himself in a world that values only youth and success culminates in a tragic but purifying decision. Shaw's lucid style and sharp dialogue create a portrait of a man at a crossroads, while his critique of society resonates universally. The novel is a depiction of the transience of fame and the search for authenticity.
