Nesretan i povučeni grof Edo Plessen uvjeren je da su ga u ranoj mladosti njegov neobuzdani temperament i strast naveli da izvrši ubojstvo. Ta spoznaja prati ga na svakom koraku njegova života i on se, mučen saviješću i strahom otkrivanja zločina, odriče životnih radosti zatvoren u svome dvorcu. Nakon što u dvorac dolazi odgojiteljica koju će malo pomalo obuzeti interes za mladog grofa, a zatim i čar beznadne ljubavi, mlada će djevojka krenuti putem koji je prošao mladi grof te otkriti zabludu u kojoj je godinama živio.
