Naučnofantastični roman koji je krajem 19. veka napisao poznati francuski pripovedač za decu i mlade, ujedno i začetnik žanra naučne fantastike.

Žil Vern je pisao klasične avanturističke romane sa naučnim elementima u kojima je stvarao naučnofantastične priče. Posle uspeha romana Pet nedelja u balonu (1862), nastavio je da piše fantastične avanturističke knjige. Roman 20.000 milja pod morem objavljen je u nastavcima 1869. i 1870. godine. Njegovi opisi mnogih morskih stvorenja i mesta su iznenađujući, kao i izumi koji u to vreme nisu postojali ili koje je napredovao svojom maštom, poput električne podmornice i ronilačkih odlivaka.
