Francusko slikarstvo XIX. stoljeća: od Davida do Matissa

Francusko slikarstvo XIX. stoljeća: od Davida do Matissa

Ljubo Babić

Ljubo Babić's extensive study provides an overview of 19th-century French painting through analyses of key masters and movements, from Neoclassicism to Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. The book contains 4 color reproductions, 64 black-and-white repro

The work provides a systematic overview of French painting throughout the 19th century – from the neoclassicism of Jacques-Louis David, through romanticism (Géricault, Delacroix), realism (Courbet), Barbizon School, impressionism (Monet, Renoir, Degas), to post-impressionism (Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin) and the early 20th century with Henri Matisse and fauvism.

Babić's approach is synthetic and very artistically sensitive. As an active painter, he pays special attention to technical and artistic issues – color, light, composition, brushstroke and the way of shaping space. He connects the historical and social context with a deep analysis of works of art, emphasizing the development of styles and personalities of individual masters. The style is accessible, yet professional and refined, intended for both professional and wider cultural audiences.

This book represents one of Babić's most important contributions to the popularization of world art in Croatia in the mid-20th century and is considered a classic work of Croatian art essays and art history.
