Kao iu mnogim drugim Urisovim knjigama, priča je uglavnom ispričana iz ugla novinara; u ovom slučaju, američko-italijanskog novinara Kristofera de Montija, koji je raspoređen u Varšavu nakon što je izveštavao o Španskom građanskom ratu. Iako je trebalo da bude nepristrasan i neutralan posmatrač, upoznaje se i zbližava i sa nacističkom hijerarhijom i sa Jevrejima u Varšavi. Ima strastvenu aferu sa suprugom jednog od vođa jevrejske zajednice, a bavi se i prostitutkama koje su mu obezbedili nacisti. Dok je geto opkoljen i pretvoren u ruševine, on se pridružuje hrabrim braniocima. On je jedan od retkih preživelih i uspeva da pobegne sa mladom ženom Gabrijelom Rak, koja je trudna sa detetom jednog od branilaca Andreja Androfskog, bivšeg oficira poljske vojske. Naziv "Mila 18" je uzet iz bunkera štaba jevrejskog otpora ispod zgrade u ulici Mila 18.
