Johann Strauss: Njegov život, njegova djela, njegovo doba

Werner Jaspert

The monograph Johann Strauss – His Life, His Works, His Times by Werner Jaspert presents in detail the life and artistic oeuvre of Johann Strauss the Elder (1804–1849), known as the "Father of the Viennese Waltz".

Throughout the book, the author analyzes Strauss's role in shaping the musical identity of Vienna during the first half of the 19th century.

Strauss was born in Vienna in 1804 and showed musical talent early on. He founded his own orchestra and became famous for composing and performing waltzes, polkas, and marches. His music reflects the spirit of the times and Viennese society, with the waltz "Loreley-Rhein-Klänge" in particular standing out.

Jaspert describes in detail Strauss's tours of Europe, his influence on the popularization of dance music, and his contribution to the development of the Viennese music scene. The book also explores his family dynamics, including his relationship with his son Johann Strauss the Younger, who also became a famous composer.

Strauss died in Vienna in 1849 of scarlet fever. His contribution to music and culture remains significant, and Jaspert's monograph provides a comprehensive insight into his life and work, enriched with 12 illustrations that further bring this historical period closer to the reader.
