Dolores, a housewife on Little Tall Island, is suspected of the murder of her employer, the wealthy and disabled Vera Donovan. As she explains what really happened, she uncovers dark secrets from her past.
The novel's central theme is the death of Dolores's husband, Joe, a violent alcoholic who abused her and their daughter. Dolores confesses that she killed him to protect her daughter, pushing him down a well, with Vera's tacit approval.
