In East and West (1986), Green weaves an epic tale of love and war, intertwining the lives of ordinary people with great historical events. The novel is a powerful fresco of war, but also of an indestructible spirit seeking light amidst darkness.

The novel's plot stretches from the snow-covered streets of Warsaw to the scorching deserts of the Pacific, following the fates of two young people - a Pole named Anna and an American named John. Anna, a young Jewish woman from Warsaw, lives in the shadow of the Nazi occupation. Her world, filled with dreams of music and freedom, collapses when her family is taken to the ghetto. Determined to survive, she joins the resistance movement, where she meets Jakub, a brave fighter who gives her hope, but also faces impossible choices between love and duty. Her fight for survival in the hell of the Holocaust reveals the strength of the spirit, but also the price she pays for freedom.

On the other side of the world, John, a young American marine, fights on the Pacific islands against the Japanese army. His naive faith in heroism fades before the horrors of war, and an encounter with a Japanese prisoner of war, Mie, who hides her own secrets, deepens his conflict between hatred for the enemy and humanity. Their unexpected connection becomes a beacon in the chaos, but war knows no mercy.

Green masterfully weaves together Anna and John's stories, showing how East and West, despite their geographical distance, meet in universal themes of loss, love, and hope. As Anna struggles with anti-Semitism and betrayal, and John with the brutality of war, their fates symbolize the struggle to preserve humanity. The novel culminates in a moving connection, where personal sacrifices intertwine with historical upheavals, leaving the question of whether love can survive in a world ravaged by hatred.
