Jo Nesbo

The Redstart is the third novel in the Harry Hole series by Jo Nesbø. The story takes place in two time periods, interweaving the events of World War II with modern crimes in Norway.

In 1944, we follow Norwegian soldiers fighting on the side of the Nazis in the trenches near Leningrad. One of them, Daniel, is killed, while a wounded soldier in a Vienna hospital poses as him, beginning a love story with a nurse, Helena. Decades later, in 1999, Detective Harry Hole, a troubled but brilliant investigator, is faced with the consequences of a diplomatic incident in which he accidentally shot an American Secret Service agent during President Clinton's visit to Norway. Transferred to the Police Security Service, Harry is assigned to investigate the smuggling of a rare large-caliber rifle, known as the assassin's weapon. When a former Nazi is found dead, Harry connects the case to the arms smuggling, uncovering a web of crimes linked to Norway's Nazi past.

As the investigation progresses, the number of murders increases, and Harry discovers that the killer is pursuing his own revenge plan, driven by events from fifty years ago. The novel explores themes of collaboration, betrayal and trauma as Harry, faced with his own demons, tries to stop the killer. Nesbø masterfully builds tension, and the characters, especially Harry Hole, leave a strong impression with their complexity.
