The main character, Robert Faber, one of the world's most famous writers, loses all meaning in life after the death of his wife Natalie. In a luxurious hotel in Biarritz, on the French coast, he writes the last pages and plans suicide, thinking about the past, love and health problems.

However, like a lighthouse in the dark, a phone call arrives that changes everything: Mira, his great love from his youth, arrives in Vienna from besieged Sarajevo in a UN convoy. She did not come alone - she brought their grandson who needs urgent medical attention. This unexpected reconnection awakens forgotten emotions in Robert, but also opens old wounds. The past catches up with him in the form of a Nazi criminal who, after fifty years, seeks revenge for the events of World War II.

Simmel's style, dynamic and emotional, leads us through a labyrinth of memories, encounters and action sequences: from romantic conversations in Vienna to tense moments of escape from pursuers. The novel explores themes of forgiveness, the power of love in the face of the horrors of war, and the search for new meaning in adulthood. Through Faber's perspective, Simmel criticizes European indifference to the Balkan war of the 1990s, celebrating humanity and hope.
