Uska ulica

Uska ulica

Čedomir Minderović

The story takes place in a narrow Belgrade street - nameless, but inspired by the real streets of Dorćol or Savamala - where the lives of poor workers, artisans, peasants and marginals intertwine.

The main narrator, a poet-witness (reminiscent of Minderović himself), wanders the street and records fragments of life: conversations in bars, love adventures, small joys and great sufferings of ordinary people. The central thread is the story of a young man from the street who dreams of a better life, but is trapped in the cycle of poverty, family obligations and social obstacles. Through a series of vignettes – from nighttime meetings in courtyards to daily conflicts in the market – Minderović shows how a narrow street becomes a metaphor for a narrow destiny: love is born and dies in the dark, friendships break down under the pressure of the economy, and dreams are extinguished in routine.
