For Engels, the Peasants' War was the first major class conflict in German history and a forerunner of later revolutionary struggles. He sees in it important lessons about the role of class, leadership and ideology in revolutionary movements.

"The German Peasants' War" refers to Engels's 1850 historical study, in which he analyzes the peasant uprisings in Germany in 1524–1525, with particular emphasis on the role of Thomas Müntzer and the social, economic, and political conditions that led to the uprising. The 1950 edition is merely a reprint of that classic text.
