Crvena konjica

Isak Emanuilovič Babelj

A collection of short stories based on the author's own experience. Isak Babelj participated in the campaign of Budyonny's cavalry army against Pilsudski's Polish army.

"The Red Cavalry" is a collection of short stories based on Babel's experiences with the First Cavalry Army during the Polish-Soviet War of 1920. Through stark, poetic, and often brutal scenes, the narrator describes the conflict between the ideals of revolution and the reality of wartime violence. The book exposes the moral contradictions and inner fractures of the individual in a time of ideological upheaval.
