Clare Abshire and Henry DeTamble meet when Clare is 6 and Henry is 36 – but Henry is from the future, because he suffers from a rare genetic disorder: he spontaneously disappears from the present and travels through time, always naked, with no control over his destination or duration. He cannot take anything with him, so he returns to the same place, but sometimes at a different age.
Clare grows up in a wealthy family in Michigan, where as a little girl she meets the mysterious Henry who comes to her from the future and becomes her best friend, teacher and first love. She loves him all her life, waiting for him, drawing him, keeping a diary of his visits. Henry, on the other hand, only meets Clare when she is 28 – in a library in Chicago, where she works as a librarian. For him, it is the first time he has met her; for her, they have known each other for decades.
The novel is woven in a non-linear chronological chaos: the chapters are marked with dates and years, so the reader sees their lives from different perspectives and ages. The love is deep, passionate, but also tragic – Henry disappears at the worst moments (wedding, pregnancy, childbirth), returning injured, old or younger.
