Tragom prošlosti Broda

Vladimir Rem

A local feuilleton chronicle of Slavonski Brod from Roman times (Marsunija), through Turkish rule, the Military Border and the fortress to the 19th/20th century. A warm, nostalgic account of the history, customs and sights of the town.

Tracing the History of Brod by Vladimir Rem is a classic work of local historiography and native literature. The author, a native of Brod (1927–2011), poet, columnist and chronicler, guides the reader through the history of the city using old documents, chronicles, folk tales and personal memories.

The book begins with Roman Marsuni and early medieval mentions, passes through the Turkish period (Brod as an important fortress), the Austrian Military Border, the construction of the fortress and the development of the 18th–19th centuries, and touches on more recent events. Rem discusses old place names, the Franciscan presence, economic prosperity (trade, crafts), cultural life, famous Brod residents, customs and forgotten anecdotes.

The style is accessible, lively, often humorous and nostalgic – typical of the feuilleton form of the 1960s. Illustrations (photographs, drawings) enhance the impression. The work is not a strict scientific monograph, but a warm, intimate portrait of the city from the pen of a lover of his homeland. Today it is a rarity and a valuable source for connoisseurs of Slavonian history, especially Brod na Savi.
