Parfem: Povijest jednog ubojice
A novel about a murderer and his exploratory journey into the realm of scent; a novel about a murderer who was driven to his crime not by hatred, love or despair, but only by his nose.
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille is a callous freak with a perfect sense of smell who, in his quest to create the most magical scent of humanity, does not shy away from monstrous crimes because he lacks the key ingredient for the perfect scent – young girls. Against the historical backdrop of eighteenth-century France, Süskind creates a kind of "olfactory" thriller that dissects the perversion in the individual and society, whereby it seems that the vile scoundrel and villain is actually always a consequence of a corrupt society.
