Fasciniran Floberom, mladi pisac zamišlja otkrivanje Istoka koji je njegov slavni prethodnik opisao u pismima još 1847. godine. Na putovanju upoznaje još jednog, već poznatog švajcarskog pisca, Martina Milea, čiji stavovi o umetnosti i romanu vređaju islamski senzibilitet. Mile uzalud pokušava da krene na turneju po mračnim kairskim barovima. Nazad u Francuskoj, Mile objavljuje knjigu koja izaziva skandal i skoro postaje novi Salman Ruždi.
