Misterijsko pozorište razvilo se iz eleuzinskih misterija i njihovog pristupa ljudima.

Svaka njegova vrsta teži da nečemu nauči, posebno tragedija. Kroz iznenadne obrte i šokantne scene, gledalac se postepeno uključuje u radnju kao neposredni učesnik koji je duboko pogođen tim događajima. Misterijsko pozorište teži da prikaže suštinu stvari i kao takvo ima snažan katarzični efekat na publiku. U tragediji, ljudskim delovanjem upravljaju sudbina i bogovi; ljudi su podložni Zakonu, Dike, prema kojem svako delovanje rezultira odgovarajućim reakcijama, prateći neumoljivi moralni mehanizam.
