Tajna rijeke Luzette

Miriam Delly

Young and temperamental orphan Gaïta Valprez lives wild and free by the Luzette River in a castle in Auvergne. When she is sent to boarding school, her rebellious spirit leads her into conflict, secrets and unexpected love.

The Secret of the Luzette River is a popular romantic novel by the French writing couple Delly (Jeanne and Frédéric Petitjean de La Rosière). The story takes place in the romantic landscape of Auvergne in France. The main character, Gaïta Valprez, a young, beautiful and untamable orphan, lives the free life of a “savage” next to an old castle that is mourned by the Luzette River.

After the death of her guardian, Gaïta is sent to a strict boarding school, where her proud and rebellious character causes numerous conflicts and dramas. The novel is filled with secrets of the past, family mysteries, subtle romantic tensions and typical Dellyian moral dilemmas.

Like most of Delly’s works, this novel belongs to classic French Catholic fiction with clear ethical messages. The style is light, sentimental and extremely readable, with an emphasis on the heroine’s inner world, her struggle for happiness and ultimately finding the right path through love and renunciation.

The 1930 edition is relatively rare on the antiquarian market today. Copies in solid condition are sought after by collectors of old Croatian fiction, fans of Delly's novels, and those who collect editions from the interwar period.
