Češka vježbenica za srednje i njima slične škole

Stjepan Radić

Czech language textbook with exercises for high schools. A practical language manual written by Stjepan Radić in 1911 with the aim of bringing the Croatian and Czech peoples closer together.

This is the first systematic Croatian Czech language textbook intended for high school students and similar educational institutions. Stjepan Radić, a great Croatian politician and intellectual, wrote this workbook as part of his broader philological and cultural work with which he wanted to strengthen ties between Croats and Czechs within the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy.

The book contains grammar exercises, reading texts, conversational dialogues and a dictionary, adapted to the needs of Croatian students. Radić's approach is practical and pedagogical: he emphasizes the similarities between the Croatian and Czech languages, which made learning easier. This work (together with his earlier Grammar of the Czech Language and Dictionary) represented the main manual for learning Czech in Croatia for several decades.

Radić's Czech activity was deeply connected with his Slavic and federalist ideas. He lived in Prague, knew the Czech language and culture well, and believed that Croats could learn a lot from the Czechs about the national economy, education and political organization.

Today, this is a rare antiquarian book of high cultural and historical value. It represents an important part of Radić's intellectual legacy outside of politics and testifies to his role as a popularizer of Czech-Croatian cultural ties at the beginning of the 20th century.
