Brodkovski odvjetnik: Slika iz savremenog moravskog života

Vaclav Beneš Šumavsky

"The Brodkov Lawyer" by Václav Beneš Šumavsky is a realistic novel about a lawyer, social conditions, morality and everyday life in Moravia. Popular Czech fiction in Croatian translation.

The book is subtitled A Picture from Contemporary Moravian Life and is a realistic novel set in everyday life in Moravia at the end of the 19th century. Václav Beneš Šumavský (1850–1934), a Czech journalist, prose writer and translator, wrote mainly conventional novels, humorous stories and short stories with a didactic and moral emphasis.

In The Lawyer of Brodkov he depicts the life of a small Moravian town through the fate of a local lawyer. The novel faithfully depicts social conditions, relations between the bourgeoisie, clergy and peasantry, family drama, professional ethics and everyday conflicts. The author relies on the realistic tradition, with an emphasis on moral dilemmas, honesty and the influence of the environment on the individual.

The work belongs to popular Czech fiction of that time, which was widely read in South Slavic countries. Pavlo Rakoš's translation fits into the wave of interest in Czech literature in Croatia at the end of the 19th century, when Czech authors (especially those with a realistic and moralistic approach) were highly regarded.

The style is clear, narrative and accessible to a wider audience. The novel is not high literature, but it was well received because it faithfully depicted everyday provincial life, with an emphasis on social problems, justice and human weaknesses. Beneš Šumavský uses the local color of the Moravian environment – customs, mentality and social relations – which gave the Croatian reader a sense of closeness to the Czech cultural space.

This Sisak edition from 1894 is today a rare antiquarian copy and testifies to the lively publishing activity in the province and to the cultural ties between Czechs and Croats during the Austro-Hungarian era. It represents a typical example of popular realistic prose of the 19th century, which is both entertaining and educational.
