Iz mladih dana: Pjesme izvorne i prevedene

Franjo Marković

From the Days of Youth (1883) by Franjo Marković is a collection of lyrical poems from the youth of this prominent Croatian intellectual, including original patriotic and intimate poems and translations by foreign authors.

The collection opens with the patriotic-programmatic poem Angjeo slavjanstva from 1864, followed by original poems entitled "Ballade i romances" – poems mostly imbued with patriotism, love motifs and romantic pathos. Then come Prievodi s Polskoga, in which Marković presents Polish romantic poetry (primarily Mickiewicz and Słowacki). At the end of the book is the author's afterword Neke opazke k pjesmam, in which he explains the origin and circumstances of the creation of individual poems and where they were previously published.

The poems are written in classical romantic forms, in a melodic language full of idealism, Slavic mutuality and longing for national awakening. The style is sublime and rhetorically rich, typical of Croatian poetry of the post-Illyrian period, with visible influences from Mažuranić, Preradović and European romantics.

Although Franjo Marković later became better known as a philosopher and aesthetician, this collection bears witness to his strong poetic youth and active participation in the literary life of the 19th century. Today it is a rare antiquarian edition and a valuable document on the development of Croatian romantic lyric poetry.
