Plinije Stariji

Anthology of Latin Fragments of Pliny the Elder with Croatian Explanations (Golik, 1909) presents ancient views on nature, man and the world, with brief comments for understanding and teaching.

Selected Pliny's Papers (1909) by Julius Golik brings an anthology of the original Latin text of Pliny the Elder from Naturalis historia, accompanied by explanations and notes in Croatian. The concept is bilingual in a functional sense: the Latin fragments preserve the style and terminology of the ancient author, while the Croatian notes serve to understand the historical context, interpret words and phrases, and clarify geographical, mythological, and natural science concepts. Such an arrangement makes the book suitable for school and university classes in classical languages, and for readers who want to read Pliny in the original with reliable domestic support.

Golik selects chapters that provide a broad cross-section of Pliny's encyclopedia: cosmology and celestial phenomena, meteorology, short geographies of seas, rivers, and mountains, then the natural history of plants, animals, and minerals, and sections on man, health, and the “wonders of nature.” The editor adds concise Croatian commentaries to each chapter: notes on Roman measures and weights, old toponyms, etymologies, and parallels in Greek and Roman authors. The notes also discreetly indicate where Pliny conveys accurate observations and where traditional reports and beliefs, encouraging readers to critically read the sources.

The pedagogical value of the edition rests on a threefold function: 1) as a Latin language reader with authentic, linguistically diverse sentences; 2) as an introduction to the history of science, because ancient descriptions of nature can be compared with modern knowledge; 3) as a cultural-historical document that shows how the Roman world imagined space, the body, and natural forces. Golik's Croatian explanations are clear and economical, focused on the conceptual and lexical minimum necessary for independent reading of the Latin text, without overloading it with interpretation.

In the Croatian publishing and philological context of the early 20th century, this book plays the role of a mediator between classical antiquity and the contemporary reader: it confirms the importance of reading the original, while at the same time offering tools for understanding. Retaining Pliny's encyclopedic spirit and curiosity, Selected Pliny's Letters represents a valuable handbook for classicists, historians of science, and all who wish to learn about the ancient picture of nature in the language in which it was written.
