Marin Držić

A collection of love lyrics and dramatic works by Marin Držić. Contains his poems and parts of Tirena, Venus and Adon and Novela od Stanac. Facsimile reprint of the second edition from 1607, printed by Frano Barillet in Venice.

The original work was first published in 1551 in Venice during Držić's lifetime (by Niccolò Bascarini), but that copy has not survived. A reprint of the second edition from 1609 was published by Sveučilišna naklada Liber in Zagreb in 1989.

The book represents Držić's only work printed during his lifetime. It contains love lyrics (poems) in the Renaissance Petrarchist spirit, and three dramatic texts: the pastoral drama Tirena, the rustic-mythological drama The Tale of How the Goddess Venus Enslaves the Love of the Beautiful Adonis set to comedy (Venere and Adonis), and the carnival play Novela od Stanca.

The title page uses the old Rabbian orthography with the characteristic x (for š), z and other graphemes typical of the 16th and 17th centuries. The work reflects Držić's early phase of creativity, in which high style (pastoral and mythological motifs) are mixed with folk, realistic elements. The poems show rich metaphors, Petrarchist motifs of love suffering, the beauty of a lady and Renaissance vitalism, while the dramatic parts announce the later comedographic mastery of the author Dundo Maroj.

This edition is of great significance for Croatian literary history because it provides a direct insight into the authentic language and orthography of the Dubrovnik Renaissance. The 1989 reprint allows contemporary readers and researchers access to a rare monument without damaging the original.

Today, the booklet is sought after in antiquarian bookstores and serves as an important source for studying Držić's work, the development of the Croatian literary language and the Renaissance culture of Dubrovnik. It represents a fundamental part of the legacy of the father of Croatian drama and one of the earliest printed monuments of Croatian lyric and drama.
