Vladimir Babić

"History of the Middle Ages for the 5th grade of high school" is a textbook from 1953 that clearly presents the development of medieval Europe with rich illustrations, photographs, and historical maps.

History of the Middle Ages for the 5th grade of high school by Vladimir Babić is a school textbook intended for students of the fifth grade of high school and represents one of the characteristic history textbooks of Croatian education in the post-war period. The work deals with the political, social, economic and cultural development of Europe during the Middle Ages, from the fall of the Western Roman Empire to the beginning of the modern age.

The author systematically presents the emergence of medieval states, the development of feudal society, the role of the Church, the Crusades, medieval cities, trade, art and cultural changes that marked European history. The text is adapted to the teaching needs of high school education and is written in a clear and didactic manner, with an emphasis on understanding historical processes and their consequences.

A special value of the textbook is its rich illustrative equipment. The book contains a large number of illustrations, reproductions of works of art, black and white photographs of historical monuments, manuscripts and architectural buildings, as well as historical maps and color charts that make it easier for students to follow territorial changes and important events. The visual content played an important educational role and contributed to a more modern approach to history teaching.

As an antiquarian school textbook from 1953, the work today has cultural and documentary value because it provides insight into the educational programs of the time, teaching methods, and the way medieval history was interpreted in Croatian high schools in the mid-20th century.
