Povijest hrvatske književnosti za učiteljske pripravnike

Antun Pechan

An overview of Croatian literature intended for teacher trainees provides a concise overview of literary development from the oldest monuments to the end of the 19th century, with an emphasis on educational purposes.

History of Croatian Literature for Teacher Trainees (1896) Antun Pechan is one of the earlier Croatian literary and historical manuals intended for the education of future teachers. Created during the period of intensive development of Croatian education and national culture, the book had the task of providing a systematic and clear insight into the development of Croatian literature and serving as a teaching aid in teacher training schools.

The work chronologically traces the Croatian literary heritage from the oldest Glagolitic and medieval monuments through Renaissance and Baroque writers to the Revival movement and contemporary authors of the 19th century. Special attention is paid to the most important writers, their works and their role in shaping the Croatian language and national identity. In accordance with the pedagogical purpose, the text is written clearly and concisely, without extensive scientific discussions, in order to enable students to acquire basic knowledge about the national literary tradition.

The book was written at a time when Croatian literary historiography was just taking shape as a separate discipline, and today it represents an interesting document of the development of literary science and education in Croatia at the end of the 19th century. At the same time, it testifies to the then understanding of the literary canon, cultural history and the educational role of literature in education.

The first edition from 1896 is today a rare and sought-after copy among collectors of pedagogical literature, Croatist editions and older books dedicated to Croatian cultural history. Due to its educational and documentary value, it represents an interesting contribution to the history of Croatian literary historiography and the school system.
