In the book, the author combined general biology with morphology, comparative anatomy, embryology and cytology of lower animals. He pays special attention to evolutionary thought – from Darwinism through neo-Lamarckism to the then current theories of inheritance and variability. The systematic part provides a detailed overview of protozoa, transitional Mesozoa and the first metazoans: sponges, cnidarians, ribobranchs and various groups of worms, with an emphasis on their structure, development and mutual phylogenetic relationships.

The work is written in a clear, accessible language and is characterized by a pedagogical style that made the material understandable to students of that time. It was published at a time when the need for a modern textbook in the mother tongue was great, and it quickly became standard literature at universities.

Today, this book is a rare antiquarian edition.
