Mato Lovrak

Enemy No. 1 follows Zvonko and his gang in Zagreb, where they rebel against adult rules. Through mischief, conflicts, and adventures, they learn about justice, responsibility, and growing up.

Mate Lovrak's novel Enemy No. 1 depicts a children's world filled with rebellion, friendship, and a desire for justice. The plot is set in Zagreb, where high school student Zvonko and his group decide to resist the rules and restrictions imposed on them by adults. They don't just stop at protesting, but they initiate real small actions: they distribute leaflets, rebel against bad seats in the cinema, and even go a step further when they embark on kidnapping a dog that they believe has greater rights and privileges than children.

Such situations give the novel an adventurous and lively rhythm, but at the same time reveal a child's way of thinking. Zvonko and his friends strongly feel injustice and want to prove that children also have the right to respect, a voice, and freedom. Their rebellion is therefore not just mischief, but an expression of the need for adults to take them seriously. However, as their actions become more daring, they encounter unexpected obstacles and gradually discover that the adult world is not as simple or completely unjust as they initially believed.

Lovrak thus combines humor, childish resourcefulness, and an educational message through a dynamic and exciting story. The novel talks about friendship, togetherness, the fight against injustice, and maturing, and shows that courage does not only consist of rebellion, but also in understanding the responsibility of one's actions.
