Dvoje između ratnih linija

Ivan Supek

Two Between the War Lines by Ivan Supek is a novel about an anarchic young man Mladen and a disciplined student Milica, who face ideological conflicts and war lines in pre-war and wartime Zagreb.

Two Between the War Lines (1959) is the first novel by Ivan Supek. The plot follows two main characters: the somewhat anarchic Mladen (a former medical student) and the disciplined, committed student Milica. Their destinies intertwine in dramatic events at the University of Zagreb on the eve of World War II, during the ideological conflicts on the left, and then during the occupation days and wartime.

Mladen represents an individualistic, rebellious spirit, while Milica embodies discipline and commitment to collective struggle. The novel depicts in detail student life, polemics, political struggles, and the atmosphere of the university. The characters fall into the occupation days, and later their destinies are analyzed through the prism of psychological, moral, and political dilemmas. Supek successfully shows how their relationship and personalities develop under the pressure of historical events.

The author breaks free from the schemes of typical war novels: instead of a black-and-white division, he delves deeply into the complexity of human motives, weaknesses, and efforts to preserve dignity in a time when everything is subordinated to collective goals. The novel critically depicts the dogmatism of different sides and highlights the tragedy of an intellectual who finds himself “between the war lines”.

The style is analytical, psychologically penetrating, and rich in dialogue. Supek writes from personal experience and a humanistic belief in the value of free thought and individual conscience. The work was later revised, which shows the author’s constant self-reflection.
