Djela XVI: Kritike: Prikazi i polemike iz hrvatske i srpske književnosti i plastičnih umjetnosti (1905.–1909.)

Antun Gustav Matoš

The sixteenth volume of the first edition of Matoš's collected works brings together literary and art criticism and polemics from the period 1905–1909, confirming Matoš as one of the most prominent critics of Croatian modernism.

The sixteenth volume of Critics: Reviews and Controversies from Croatian and Serbian Literature and the Plastic Arts (1905–1909) is part of the first edition of the collected works of Antun Gustav Matoš, published in 17 volumes by Binoza between 1935 and 1940. This edition represents the first systematic attempt to gather and critically organize Matoš's literary legacy and occupies an important place in Croatian cultural and literary history.

The volume gathers Matoš's literary and art criticism, reviews and polemical articles written between 1905 and 1909. In them, the author analyzes the works of Croatian and Serbian writers, painters and sculptors, evaluating them according to high aesthetic criteria and in the light of contemporary European artistic trends. Matoš's texts are distinguished by their erudition, stylistic sophistication and argumentative criticism, and are often imbued with irony, wit and polemical sharpness. He pays special attention to the role of art in shaping national cultural identity, advocating originality, artistic freedom and high creative standards.

The volume was edited by Julije Benešić, while Milan Matoš collected and prepared the writer's legacy, enabling the publication of the first complete edition of Matoš's works. This collection represents a valuable source for the study of Croatian modernism, the development of literary and art criticism and cultural and artistic debates at the beginning of the 20th century, confirming Matoš as one of the most significant aestheticians and critics of his time.
