Inkvizitorij

Inkvizitorij

Robert Pinget

Robert Pinget's novel Inquisitorii is a mature and original work, which, despite the strangeness of its writing style and storytelling method, intensely engages the reader, allowing them to penetrate almost to the bottom of a person's inner world.

The title itself, a symbolic coinage of the words inquisition (torture) and interrogatoire (interrogation), speaks of the way in which the writer decided to seek the truth: as in Kafka's The Trial, some faceless investigators, who are unknown neither as to who they are nor on whose behalf they are interrogating, ask - in writing - questions to an old deaf servant in a castle, using a completely insignificant pretext for this: his masters' secretary has disappeared from the castle and has not returned. And not only do we not know who these "investigators" are, we do not even know how many there are: how many "investigators" write notes with questions that the old deaf servant has to answer, questions that are seemingly completely meaningless and it is not even clear what they are actually aiming at.
