One Day, an extremely popular and acclaimed novel by British author David Nicholls, is an emotional, humorous and moving story of love, friendship and coming of age. The story begins on July 15, 1988, when Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, two completely different students, meet on the night after their graduation from the University of Edinburgh. Although they are about to be separated and go their separate ways, that one day forever links their destinies.
The concept of the novel is unique in its structure: the author takes us through the next twenty years of their lives, depicting their relationship meets-and-bounds exclusively on the same date – July 15 (St. Swithin). While Emma, a smart and idealistic working-class girl, goes through identity crises and searches for her own path, Dexter, a handsome and privileged young man, quickly gains fame as a television presenter, losing himself in vices and superficiality.
Through two decades of ups and downs, failed marriages and unfulfilled dreams, Emma and Dexter remain each other's rock and support. Nicholls masterfully captures the fleeting nature of time, missed opportunities and unspoken feelings, creating an unforgettable story about how small moments and one person can shape us forever.
