The collection of papers On Victims in War and Peace, edited by Prof. Dr. Sc. Zvonimir Šeparović, is a comprehensive professional and scientific work dealing with victimology – the science of victims. The book brings together works by eminent experts in the fields of law, criminology, sociology, psychology and medicine, offering a multi-layered analysis of the position of victims in different social and historical circumstances.
The first part of the work focuses on the analysis of suffering in war conflicts, with a special emphasis on violations of international humanitarian law, war crimes, forced displacement and the trauma that survivors bear. The authors analyze the mechanisms of transitional justice, the role of international and domestic courts and the importance of documenting crimes in order to preserve the truth and exercise the right to compensation.
The second part of the collection focuses on victims in peacetime conditions, covering topics such as domestic violence, abuse of power, institutional neglect and victimization within the judicial system. Special attention is paid to the need to develop systematic support for victims, preventive measures and strengthening social awareness of the human rights and dignity of each victim.
