Paper Moon (originally published under the title Addie Pray) is the best-known novel by American author Joe David Brown. Set in the American Midwest during the 1930s—the bleak era of the Great Depression—it tells a warm, witty, and unusual story about survival on the fringes of the law. The protagonists are Moze Pray, a resourceful drifter and small-time con man who sells Bibles to widows, and Addie, a nine-year-old girl left alone after her mother's death. Suspecting that Moze might be her father, Addie joins him on the road. Despite her young age, Addie proves to be an exceptionally bright, cunning, and calculating partner in their schemes, often outdoing Moze himself in ingenuity. Through a series of episodes filled with humor and unpredictable situations, this dynamic duo travels along dusty roads, evading the police and dangerous local toughs. Beneath the layers of adventure and petty crime, the novel offers a touching story about loneliness, family, and the forging of a deep bond between two outsiders. The book achieved great popularity and cult status, and also served as the basis for Peter Bogdanovich’s award-winning film of the same name.
