The novel Virgin Soil Upturned (Parts 1–2) is an epic work by Nobel Prize winner Mikhail Sholokhov that comprehensively depicts one of the most dramatic periods in Soviet history—the forced collectivization of the countryside in the Don region during the early 1930s. The plot follows the arrival of Semyon Davydov, a Leningrad worker and staunch communist, in the Cossack village of Gremyachy Log, tasked with establishing a kolkhoz (collective farm). Together with local activists Nagulnov and Razmyotnov, Davydov encounters fierce resistance from peasants unwilling to part with their land and livestock, as well as an organized underground counter-revolution led by former Tsarist officers. With remarkable realism and a profound understanding of the Cossack mentality, Sholokhov portrays the internal rifts and divisions within the peasantry—ranging from wealthy kulaks fighting for survival to impoverished peasants torn between centuries-old traditions and the promises of the new regime. Despite the ideological framework of the era in which it was written, the novel is distinguished by superbly crafted characters, authentic dialogue, and an infusion of folk humor, remaining one of the seminal works of 20th-century Russian literature.
