Marguerite Yourcenar

Inspired by a personal love crisis, Marguerite Yourcenar in the collection "Fires" (1984) combines ancient myths, lyrical prose and modern motifs to explore the destructive power of passion, loneliness and suffering.

Fires (Feux), a collection of lyrical prose and poetic essays by one of France’s greatest writers, Marguerite Yourcenar (published in Croatian translation in 1984 by Grafički zavod Hrvatske), is a work of exceptional personal intimacy and stylistic fascination. Created in 1936 in response to the author’s unrequited passion for her editor, the work explores the archetype of love as an inner conflagration—an experience of obsession and purification. Through nine chapters and lyrical monologues, Yourcenar breathes new life into figures from Greek mythology and history—such as Phaedra, Achilles, Clytemnestra, Antigone, Sappho, and Mary Magdalene. By placing these classical figures within a modern, surreal, and anachronistic context, the author intertwines ancient myth with a contemporary sensibility. Interspersed between the narrative sections are brief, highly evocative aphorisms and reflections on love, solitude, and unhappiness. Fires is a masterpiece of heightened intensity—distinguished by rich imagery, philosophical depth, and stylistic perfection—in which individual suffering is transformed into a timeless, universal artistic truth.
