Lekar na San Felipe

Lekar na San Felipe

A. J. Cronin

Dr. Harvey Leith, disillusioned with medical failure and a life crisis, finds a new purpose in life on a trip to the Canaries by saving the local population during an outbreak of an epidemic.

Doctor on San Felipe (originally published under the title Grand Canary in 1933) is a compelling psychological drama by the renowned British author and physician Archibald Joseph Cronin. The story follows Dr. Harvey Leith—a highly talented yet misunderstood researcher and physician—who suffers a professional breakdown after an experimental treatment of his ends in tragedy. Burdened by guilt, public condemnation, and profound despair, Leith decides to escape the world and sets sail for the Canary Islands. During the voyage and upon his arrival on the island (home to the San Felipe station), Leith encounters a diverse cast of characters and gradually grows close to the noble Mary Fielding. However, the island's tranquility is abruptly shattered by the outbreak of a deadly epidemic. Confronted with the suffering of the local inhabitants and a crisis that demands his expertise, Leith dons his medical coat once more and devotes himself to the fight to save human lives. Through a powerful depiction of personal transformation, Cronin explores themes of moral responsibility, redemption, professional duty, and selfless love. The novel blends tense medical drama with poignant human stories, showcasing the author’s signature narrative style.
