Ljubavna priča

Ljubavna priča

Erich Segal

This is a novel about two young people in love. The power of love has overcome all prejudices and obstacles, all except the biggest one - her untimely death. "Love Story" can be read in one go and leaves no one indifferent.

The story follows Oliver Barrett IV, a Harvard law student from a wealthy family, and Jennifer Cavilleri, a witty and modest Radcliffe music student, the daughter of an Italian immigrant. Their love begins despite social differences, filled with witty conversations, tenderness and passion. Oliver's privileged background clashes with Jenny's humble origins, which causes disagreements with his father, who opposes their relationship.

After Oliver cuts off contact with his family, the couple gets married and faces financial difficulties, building a life together. Jenny gives up her music career to support Oliver, while he works on his legal future. Their happiness, however, is cut short when Jenny is diagnosed with leukemia. The novel follows their final moments, where Jenny shows incredible courage and Oliver tries to stay strong by her side. The iconic line "Love means never having to say you're sorry" sums up their deep connection. The ending is tragic, leaving a strong impression of the transience of life and the power of love.

Segal's minimalist style, with short chapters and emotional dialogue, makes the story universal. According to reviews (e.g. Goodreads), the novel has been praised for its emotional depth and universal appeal, although some have criticized it for sentimentality. Nevertheless, it remains a classic that wins the hearts of readers.
