Imati ili biti?

Erich Fromm

Fromm distinguishes between two ways of life: “having” – focused on possession and control, and “being” – focused on experience, love and authenticity. He calls for a shift towards “being” for true happiness.

In To Have or to Be? Erich Fromm analyzes modern man who loses the meaning of life because he is trapped in the way of being “having” – defined by materialism, consumption and the desire to possess. Such a way of life leads to alienation, insecurity and the loss of authentic relationships. In contrast, there is the way of “being”, marked by love, creativity, sharing and presence in the present moment. Fromm argues that true freedom and happiness are not found in the accumulation of things, but in the development of one’s own spiritual and emotional potential. He criticizes capitalist culture for encouraging greed and superficiality and calls for a global change in consciousness – a shift from selfish possession to compassionate living. The work is a call for a more humane, conscious and sustainable existence.
