Imati i nemati (1937.) prati Harryja Morgana, koji se tijekom Velike depresije upušta u krijumčarenje i ilegalne poslove kako bi preživio. Roman oštro suprotstavlja bogate i siromašne, prikazujući borbu za opstanak u surovom svijetu.

Imati i nemati jedan je od najrealističnijih i društveno najangažiranijih romana Ernesta Hemingwaya. Radnja je smještena u Key West (Florida) i Kubu tijekom Velike ekonomske krize.

Glavni junak je Harry Morgan, snažan, odlučan i neustrašiv kapetan broda koji zarađuje za život vozeći turiste na more, a kasnije se, očajan zbog siromaštva, upušta u opasne ilegalne poslove – krijumčarenje alkohola, oružja i ljudi između Kube i Floride. Roman prati njegovu borbu za opstanak obitelji usred sveopće bijede, korupcije i beznađa.

Hemingway majstorski kontrastira dva svijeta: svijet bogatih turista i jahtaša koji besposleno uživaju u luksuzu te svijet siromašnih ribara, radnika i kriminalaca koji se bore za goli život. To je Hemingwayeva najizravnija društvena kritika – oštra slika klasnog jaza, kapitalizma i moralnog propadanja.

Stil je tipično hemingwayevski: kratke rečenice, snažan dijalog i sirova muška energija. Roman je poznat i po liku Harryjeve supruge Marie, koja pripada rijetkim snažnim ženskim likovima u njegovu opusu.

Imati i nemati predstavlja prijelaz u Hemingwayevu stvaralaštvu prema većoj društvenoj angažiranosti i smatra se važnim djelom američke književnosti 1930-ih. Dinamičan, napet i gorko realističan roman o preživljavanju, časti i cijeni siromaštva.
