Barois grows up in a Catholic environment, but gradually abandons the traditional faith and accepts a scientific view of the world, rationalism and freedom of thought. He actively participated in public life, especially during the Dreyfus Affair, which deeply divided French society and raised questions of justice, truth and civil rights. His personal development is simultaneously shown as a reflection of the conflict between religion and science, tradition and modernity, and individual conscience and social expectations.
