Torn between the free life on the river and the social expectations of Melbourne, where her painting career is flourishing, Philly struggles with internal conflicts. The novel follows her struggle for independence in a man’s world, as she faces natural disasters, floods, and economic hardship. In addition to Brenton, her life is marked by other men, including friends and rivals, while the Murray River remains a constant backdrop and symbol of change.
Cato masterfully depicts Australian history, from colonial days to the development of river trade. Through Philly’s character, the novel explores themes of loyalty, love, and the search for identity.
