Nancy Cato

Set in Echuca, on the Murray River, Philly invests her inheritance in a steamboat called the Philadelphia, beginning a new chapter in her life. The novel blends adventure, romance, and historical context, depicting the rugged beauty of the Australian landscape and life on the river.

Philly falls in love with Brenton Edwards, the steamboat’s charismatic captain, but their relationship is fraught with challenges. Torn between the free life on the river and the social expectations of Melbourne, where her painting career is flourishing, Philly struggles with internal conflicts. The novel follows her struggle for independence in a man’s world, as she faces natural disasters, floods, and economic hardship. In addition to Brenton, her life is marked by other men, including friends and rivals, while the Murray River remains a constant backdrop and symbol of change.

Cato masterfully depicts Australian history, from colonial days to the development of river trade. Through Philly’s character, the novel explores themes of loyalty, love, and the search for identity. The story ends with her coming to terms with her past and embracing the river as the heart of her life, celebrating the strength of the female spirit and the nature of Australia.
